Curriculum Vitae

Silvia-Iris Beutel took a degree in German Language and Education from the University of Bielefeld (First State Examination for Teachers in Lower and Higher Secondary Education, School subjects: German and Pedagogy/Education). After graduation, she worked in the scientific branch of the Laborschule, an institute of the Department of Educational Science at the University of Bielefeld, until 1993. Subsequently she took a position as assistant professor at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Jena.
In 1995, she achieved her doctoral qualification at the Department of Educational Science, University of Bielefeld, for her thesis Without grades. Learning reports and the pedagogical mandate of schools. In 2003, she completed her post-doctoral qualification (Habilitation) at the University of Jena with the book School certificates from the viewpoint of children. In the spring semester of 2004, she deputized the position of Professor for Educational Science with Focus on School Pedagogy, Curriculum and Teaching at the University of Dortmund. In the fall semester 2004/2005, she deputized the position of Chair for Educational Science with a Focus on School Pedagogy and Primary School Pedagogy at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. In 2006, she followed a Call for the position of Professor for School Pedagogy and General Didactics with a Focus on Teaching-Learning Processes and Empirical Research on Instruction at TU Dortmund University.

Memberships

The research of Silvia-Iris Beutel is based on an empirical approach that is substantiated in supervising, evaluating and supporting schools and school networks. In 2006, she was appointed a member of the board of educational experts of the German School Award, a joint venture of the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Heidehof Foundation, the ARD broadcasting corporation, and the weekly Die ZEIT. From 2015 until 2021 she was member of the program committee of the German School Academy in Berlin, an initiative for school development and teacher training which is funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Heidehof Foundation. Silvia-Iris Beutel participated in a Program for Developing Excellent Schools in the context of the German School Award. In 2019, she was appointed a member of the committee for hosting a thematic program on the theme of Justice in Education at the German Protestant Kirchentag. Since 2019, she is member of the advisory board of the Vivo Program for Educational Justice at the Transition to Lower Secondary Education, funded by the Foundation of the German Industry. In 2019, she participated in an interdisciplinary board of experts to advise the concept of an Arena of Change, a joint project of FC Bayern Munich and the SOS Children’s Villages. In 2021, Silvia-Iris Beutel was appointed a member of the advisory board of Impact to the Hundredth, a program on occasion of the jubilee of the Stifterverband, which is a joint initiative by German companies and foundations. In the same year, she was appointed member of the advisory board of the federal association of the campaign Humane Schools. Since 2023, Silvia-Iris Beutel is a member of the Advisory Board for Educational Practice and Research of the Institute for Educational Monitoring and Quality Development (IfBQ) in Hamburg. Since 2023, she is also a member of the Expert Panel on Competencies for the Future of the Bertelsmann Stiftung. Silvia-Iris Beutel is a founding member of the Initiating Center for Civic Education and Municipal Democracy, along with fellow professors from five departments of TU Dortmund University. She is a member of the Expert Council for the program Sustainable Development at School of the City of Dortmund, which is part of the Joint Scheme on Education, Sustainability and Municipality of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Silvia-Iris Beutel is a consulting expert in the project Concepts and Standards of Equivalent Performance of the School and Vocational Training Authority, Hamburg. In the context of her participation in the joint project InDigO, Silvia-Iris Beutel is an active member of the community of Primary School Pedagogy in North Rhine-Westphalia where various formats of Open Educational Resources (OER) are road-tested for educational practice. In 2023, the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family of the Federal State of Berlin appointed Silvia-Iris Beutel as a member of the commission of experts on teacher education for primary schools. Since 2021, she is an editor of the Yearbook of Democracy Pedagogy and Democracy Education as well as an editor of the Friedrich Jahresheft, the highest-circulation pedagogical publication in the German-speaking countries. Since the same year, she is also member of the editorial board of the book series Civic Education and Municipal Democracy, published by the Initiating Center for Civic Education and Municipal Democracy. Furthermore, Silvia-Iris Beutel is a member of the German Society of Education for Democratic Citizenship.

  • 2024-2025: BildungsTandems – Stark in die ZukunftBeziehung und Beratung als demokratische Erfahrung im Bereich des Übergangs durch Peer Coaching. Folgeprojekt: Bedarfsgerechte Förderung von Partizipationserleben, Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und Lesekompetenz (Peer tandems in education: Going on strong. Relationships and mentoring as democratic experiences of peer coaching in the course of transition to secondary school. Follow-up project: Adaptive fostering of participation experiences, personality development and reading literacy). Joint project with the Zukunftsstiftung Bildung of GLS Treuhand.   • 2022-2024: up! Ukraine-Peer-Projekt (Ukraine peer project). Joint project of the universities of Bochum, Dortmund and Duisburg-Essen and the Zukunftsstiftung Bildung of GLS Treuhand, with support by RuhrFutur. Initiated and funded by the RAG-Stiftung.
