Arrival by car

The campus of the Technical University of Dortmund is located near the freeway junction Dortmund West, where the Sauerland line A 45 (Frankfurt-Dortmund) crosses the Ruhr expressway B 1 / A 40. To the west, the university is thus connected to the dense freeway network of the Ruhr area and, beyond that, to the regions of the Lower Rhine or the Netherlands. To the east, the B 1 leads through Dortmund in the direction of Unna, where it connects with highways to Bremen, Hanover/Berlin and Kassel. To the north, the A 45 ends after a few kilometers at the A 2, which leads to the Kamener Kreuz interchange on the one hand and in the direction of Oberhausen on the other. In the southern direction, the A 45 offers another junction at the Westhofener Kreuz with the A 1, which leads from Bremen to the Cologne area. The most convenient highway exits are found on the A 45 in Dortmund-Eichlinghofen (closer to the south campus) and on the B 1 / A 40 in Dortmund-Dorstfeld (closer to the north campus). The university is signposted at both exits. In the local road network you will find signs to Campus North and Campus South. To get from Campus North to Campus South by car, you can either use the Universitätsstraße or take the narrow and winding connection Vogelpothsweg / Baroper Straße. The route from Campus South to Campus North, on the other hand, leads exclusively via Universitätsstraße, because Baroper Straße is only passable in one direction from the junction / Universitätsstraße. It is often more advisable to park your car in one of the parking lots and use the H-Bahn on campus.

Arrival by train

The TU Dortmund has its own S-Bahn station ("Dortmund Universität") on the North Campus. From there, the S-Bahn line S1 runs every 20 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and in the opposite direction to Düsseldorf main station via "Bahnhof Düsseldorf Flughafen". This makes the university directly accessible from the cities of Bochum, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and Duisburg. From downtown Dortmund, you can also get to the Technical University by bus or light rail by taking the U 41, U 45, U 47 or U 49 light rail from the main train station to the "Stadtgarten" stop, from there take the U42 to the "An der Palmweide" stop and ultimately change to the 462 or 447 buses to the "Dortmund Universität S" stop. Another option would be to take the above-mentioned subway lines from Dortmund Central Station to the stop "Dortmund Kampstraße" (one stop), from there take the subway U 43/ U 44 to the stop "Dortmund Wittener Straße" and continue with bus 447 to the stop "Dortmund Universität S". For further information on the timetable or connections to long-distance rail services, please refer to the links on the right.

Arriving by plane

Dortmund has an airport that is connected to several destinations in Central Europe. There are regular flights to Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Katowice, Krakow, Leipzig-Halle, London, Munich, Nuremberg, Paris, Poznan, Stuttgart, Vienna and Zurich, for example. For the approximately 20 kilometers from the Dortmund airport to the campus, you can take the bus to the main train station and from there the S-Bahn. Faster is usually the use of a cab. Far more international flight connections are offered by the Rhine-Ruhr Airport in Düsseldorf, about 60 kilometers away, which can be reached directly by S-Bahn from the university station.

The H-Bahn

One of the university's landmarks is the H-Bahn, which has two terminuses on the north campus. One is located directly above the S-Bahn station and is easily accessible from it by elevators. The other is located in the center of Campus North at the bridge between the University Library and the Mensa, right next to the Audimax. The H-Bahn runs from here to the South Campus and the Eichlinghofen district.
